CLINICAL APPROACH

What is mental health?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of mental, physical and social well-being, and not merely as an absence of illness. In this regard, WHO defines mental health as the ability to establish convivial relationships. Consequently, mental health implies a degree of emotional independence that enables the individual to accept change, tolerate frustration, achieve personal satisfaction and develop new and constructive ways of thinking, living and loving.

What is psychoanalytic thought?

The essence of our work is based on psychoanalytic thought. We believe that knowledge of our feelings helps us understand our conflicts both as individuals and in relation to others. The therapeutic relationship is one based on strict confidentiality and respect, and involves a strong ethical commitment towards those who come to the Centre for help.

What is psychoanalytic psychotherapy?

Many people experience emotional difficulties at some point in their lives. These often resolve without professional help. Sometimes, however, certain difficulties may be persistent due to their nature and deep roots in early experiences. Some relational experiences may be more recognizable, while others may be far from awareness, leading to what are called mental disorders.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is directed at providing an awareness of the unconscious, and of the more conscious difficulties derived from the management of different feelings, behaviors and relationships.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy works to reduce basic mental suffering, to increase the flexibility of attitudes and behaviors, and to improve personal autonomy. The therapeutic relationship promotes greater understanding of oneself, and facilities learning new ways of understanding and facing reality.

What is family fare?

It is within the family where we preferably learn to coexist, and to perceive and understand emotions. For that purpose, when consulted about children and, in some cases, teenagers, we direct our work, preferably towards the family as a whole to offer personal growth and foster mental health to all family members.

What is reeducation in the context of psychodynamic thought?

Many children have poor symbolic development that may or may not be associated with difficulties in their personal capacities and attitudes. All of this can have an effect on a child´s learning ability and school performance, even when the child is equipped with good skills. Reeducation through the experience of the relationship with the therapist, stimulates the child´s thinking processes as a whole (attention, analysis and synthesis, differentiation, organization, reasoning and deduction). This will also impact on those elements of personality that may interfere with learning.

What is psychosomatic medicine?

Psychosomatic medicine is based on the hypothesis that in the human being, body and mind are not separate and independent of one another but rather form an indivisible whole.
We refer here to how the body becomes the recipient of the “pain” of the mind, and how physical symptoms become the visible expression of mental suffering. Endocrinal diseases, those of the digestive system, the cardiovascular system, the skin, the immune system, the central and peripheral nervous system, are paradigms of the relationship between body and mind, between emotions and physical manifestations.
From this perspective, and with certain ailments, a thorough medical exam is carried outto give the patient orientation regarding the suitability of medical treatment or psychotherapy, depending on each case.
